How the Lions are preparing for Jonah Jackson having a knowledge of the Lions playbook

The Detroit Lions kick off their season at home against the Los Angles Rams on Sunday night and there’s a guy on the other side of the ball that was just in the trenches with the Lions just a few months ago. That’s guard Jonah Jackson. He’s with the Rams now.

When a player leaves a team and then becomes an opponent, there’s always a concern that player knows the playbook and is sharing it with his new team so he can help his new team beat his old team. We’ve seen it a million times.

So what are the Lions doing to combat this? Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about it on Wednesday and here’s what he had to say:

“Yeah, Jonah’s got a good grasp of what we’ve done here and what our things are, and we’ve changed a number of things for that, that we feel are important getting ready for this one. But we also, we’ve done this before with other players, you know, like (David) Blough going to Minnesota is like, ‘Oh man’ you know. And you can drive yourself crazy thinking about “they’re on to this, they’re onto that.’

You just think of just a couple of these things that really could come up where they have time to hear it, adjust, whatever. Then, alright, let’s change that. We’ll change the name of that. We’ll change this code word. Everything else, don’t worry about it. You’re in the moment, things are flying, bullets are flying for the defense to start thinking about ‘what did Jonah tell us?’ So we’re not going to overthink this. We’ve covered our covered our backs here.”

There’s that. The Lions are covering themselves on that front and while Jackson may understand elements of the Lions offense, it’s going to be hard with codes and signs changed and like Campbell said, in the heat of the moment, who can really have all that stuff on their mind?
