Dan Campbell finds an interesting parallel between Lions’ running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery and Sonic & Knuckles

Anyone that grew up in the early 90’s and had a Sega remembers how big of a deal it was when Sonic and Knuckles came out. If you had the Sonic 2 game (which I still believe 32 years later is one of the best games of all time) or Sonic 3, you could get the Knuckles expansion cartridge and then when you stick both games together, you got to go to a whole new world.

The thing is that you can’t get to the next levels without the games together. They have to fit together or it just doesn’t work. It has to be Sonic and Knuckles. It can’t be Charles Barkley Shut up and Jam and Knuckles. Believe me, I tried it and nothing happens.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell explained on Wednesday why Montgomery and Gibbs fit together so well and there continues to be more parallels between Gibbs and Montgomery and the legendary video game characters.

“You begin to mesh, you begin to take each other’s abilities and try to use them as your own a little bit and it just elevates each one of them. And they’re also competing, they’re friends, and I think that’s what we’ve got here. I think (Lions RB) David (Montgomery) and (Lions RB Jahmyr) Gibbs are like brothers, I really do, and I think David’s big brother and he’s not going to let anybody mess with him, that’s his guy. Now, he’ll mess with him, and if he does something wrong he’s going to let him know, but that’s his, he takes him under his wing and I think they’ve elevated each other and he’s made Gibbs better and I think (Gibbs)has helped him too, and when you have that and you have that competition, you have that love for one another, just the whole thing – to me, they’re the perfect combination. It doesn’t come any better, in my opinion. You’ve got everything you need out of those two players, run or pass game.”

The thing that’s really interesting and is just another is that when you put that Sonic 2 cartridge on top of the Knuckles cartridge, then you get to play Sonic 2 as Knuckles. Just like Campbell was saying, you take on each other’s abilities and try to use them as your own.

Like we said, parallels. The parallels between the two are crazy, only Montgomery isn’t evil. Then again, for someone that has won the Angry Runs scepter as many times as Montgomery has, maybe he is a little evil.
